Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to sail in order to join the club?

No.  That’s a misnomer.  You don’t need to know how to already sail to join the club.  Many of our members joined without knowing how to sail.  We’ll help you learn through riding along on one of the sailboats and the best way to learn is by doing.  You can volunteer to crew for a skipper – and the skipper will explain what to do.

Do I need a boat to join the Sailing Club?

No.  You don’t need to own a sailboat to join the club.

I already bought a sail boat, how can I learn to operate it?

The club has two fleets – a day sailor fleet (smaller sailboats without a cabin usually operated by one or two person-crews. And, a “Cruiser” fleet consisting of larger boats usually crewed by 3-4 people that have a cabin and can usually accommodate more people. So, no matter what kind of sailboat you have, there are members with expertise who can share their knowledge and who can answer questions.

When do club members sail?

The day sailors sail on Tuesday evenings and the Cruisers sail on Thursday evenings and some Sunday afternoons and holidays.

How do I join the Fond du Lac Sailing Club?

The Club meets on the first Wednesday night of the month during the summer sailing months (June through September at the Fond du Lac Yacht Club at 7PM. Just show up on that night and let someone know you’re there to see what we’re all about.  You’ll be warmly greeted by members. During non-sailing months, the club meets on the first Thursday of the month at 7PM.

What does it cost to join the Fond du Lac Sailing Club?

The first year of membership is free.  Dues then are $20.00 a year.  The club isn’t about money, it’s about expanding the love of sailing and giving sailors and would-be sailors an opportunity to get together and enjoy the sport.

Beyond learning how to sail, or improving my sailing knowledge and skills, are there any social benefits to joining the club?

Building camaraderie is part of who we are and after cruises or races, most of us get together at the yacht club to enjoy a beverage or two and more conversation.

If I am interested in crewing for a skipper, how do I make that happen?

The best way to make that happen is to attend one of our meetings and to let the membership know you are interested.  You can also show up on the first Thursday of June through September by 5:30 at the garage area across from the Yacht club and ask to crew for the nights race or cruise.
