Fond du Lac Yacht Club offers free sailing classes for area youth
2020 Information coming in March
Listed below was the 2019 season. Dates will most likely be the same adjusted to 2020.
Would your children like to learn how to sail a boat? This summer the Fond du Lac Yacht Club is again offering free sailing classes as a public service to the youth of the Fond du Lac area. The FDLYC has been conducting the youth sailing school since the 1960’s.
Registration is will soon be underway for this summer’s sailing school. Orientation will be June 5, 2019 at 6 p.m. near the FDL Yacht Club at the garage. Please make an attempt to attend and learn more about the program. Classes will be held on Mondays starting June 10, 2019 for beginning youth sailors and Tuesdays starting June 11, 2019 for beginning and advanced youth sailors and will run for eight weeks breaking for the Fourth of July holiday. Two separate classes are held each day with the first class from 9 a.m. - noon; the second class from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. The school offers instruction in 9 foot youth sailboats and in Laser class boats for those with more advanced sailing skills. There are a limited number of openings for these classes so register early. Also, parents are encouraged to help out during the lessons.
The class is open to all area youth age 9 and up. Students must be able to swim (parent verified), and they must have a parent signature on the registration form. Students will need to provide their own U.S. Coast Guard approved life vest along with shoes they can wear in the water. Life vests and water shoes must be worn at all time when on the boats and docks.
Students will be instructed on reading the wind, sailing at different angles to the wind, parts of the sailboat and how to rig a boat. Sailing terminology is practiced during classes. Knots are taught, such as the figure 8, bowline, and how to use a cleat. Students are taught what to do if capsized and how to recover. Weather awareness and sailing safety are always reinforced. Boating Rules of the Road are explained and practiced. There is always an emphasis on fun!
Throughout the summer the Fond du Lac Sailing Club sponsors small boat racing on Wednesday nights. Sailing school students are invited and encouraged to enhance their sailing skills and to participate in the Wednesday night racing. The beginner students can get more time on the water and participate in fun races starting at 6:00 p.m. Sailing school students will need to be at the FDLYC at 5:30 p.m. on race nights. Also, parents can learn to sail on Lasers at the same time on Wednesday evenings. Students also have the opportunity to serve on race judge boats and crew on Thursday night cruiser boat races.
